What’s the difference between quartz, granite, butcher block, and laminate countertops?
- Quartz is an engineered stone. It’s non-porous, strong, and low-maintenance. It does not need sealing and is typically very consistent with colors and patterns. It requires some precautions with heat.
- Granite is a natural stone. It’s very heat resistant and durable. It does need to be sealed to remain stain-resistant and is sealed during installation. Its cousins quartzite, dolomite, and marble are all similar natural stones with different mineral contents.
- Butcher Block are strips of hardwood glued together. It can either be sealed for longer durability or food-preparation. It’s very affordable but not as durable, and it requires more care. It is great for accent pieces and islands.
- Laminate is a printed surface attached to a particleboard. While affordable and easy to install, it is less popular and some of the higher quality laminate surfaces can cost as much as stone options. It is still useful for quick updates and budget remodels.
